The art world can sometimes seem like a place where people seem to be stuck on a certain idea of what is art and what is not.
And it is.
There is a great sense of entitlement and disdain that people feel towards art that is not art.
It can be easy to be dismissive of someone who doesn’t think that they are art.
I feel a bit guilty for being the person that’s always saying, “Oh, you don’t understand art.”
Or, “That’s not art.”
And yet, the art world is filled with people who do think they are.
You don’t have to be an artist to know this is not the case.
Art is a social enterprise.
Art has a social purpose.
Art can be an antidote to the sense of isolation and disinterest that many of us feel.
It has a purpose and is not just about me and my art.
Art as a social institution is something that is really powerful and that is what art is.
Art exists in the world to serve humanity, and it has a very important role to play in our society.
The art in this article is an excerpt from the book The Art of Art.
